Rottweiler: breed history and origin
History of the Rottweiler breed covered in a fog of mystery. There is no reliable information about the appearance in Germany of the ancestors of the Rottweilers. However, there is reason to believe that strong, calm dogs accompanied the legions of the Romans on campaigns in other countries. And molosses came to Rome from Asia, where they guarded cattle and dwellings.
The area in honor of which the Rottweilers were named (Rote Weil - Rottweil) was occupied by the Romans, but subsequently the Swabian tribes drove them out of there. Theirs, but not dogs. The remaining dogs were crossed with other breeds and subsequently gave a “ticket to life” to many breeds completely different from each other.
The ancestors of the Rottweilers were butcher dogs. Since the cattle were distilled on their own, there was no way to do without dogs. Dogs who helped the butchers were famous for their remarkable mind, but at the same time they had a severe character. Often, butchers, who feared that marking a successful deal would leave them without a livelihood, hung bags of money on the neck of the dogs, which guaranteed the safety of what was earned. In addition, the Rottweilers were pulling carts.
Then the railroads appeared, and at the end of the 19th century cattle were forbidden to drive on foot, and the need for rottweilers disappeared. Hard times have come in the history of the Rottweiler breed. The dogs themselves would have disappeared if it had not been for their undoubted merit - magnificent protective qualities. They were distinguished by their courage and ability not to give in to any intruder. Therefore, the Rottweilers were retrained and transferred to the category of service dogs. The popularity of the breed began to grow after the police chief with the help of such a dog dispersed a whole crowd of raging drunken sailors.
In 1921, the German Rottweiler Club in Stuttgart was created. This club is honored by the developers of the first breed standard, they also planned how the Rottweilers will develop. Gradually, the requirements for dogs became more stringent. The club exists now. The merit of its members is that, despite the modern fashion on the exterior, working qualities are still important for representatives of the breed.
In the USSR, rottweilers were used to create the breed of black terrier. And the rottweilers themselves until the 60s of the 20th century lived mainly in departmental nurseries and served in the army and police. Only a few puppies were able to get lovers. But the Soviet Rottweilers differed from the Western ones in greater massiveness and viciousness. In their historical homeland, they preferred the Rottweilers, who did not pose a danger to others, but at the same time could protect the owner and his property. Later, dogs from Western Europe began to be imported into the USSR.
Rottweilers are currently one of the most popular breeds in the world. Popularity is due to the fact that a properly raised Rottweiler is a tactful, delicate dog, quite friendly, but always ready to defend the owner. No need to try to grow an evil monster out of him - you can succeed and pay dearly for such an aspiration.
